Breakouts are beyond frustrating. I say this as a former teenage acne-sufferer who would try just about any skincare treatment that claimed it’d heal my angry spots. Unsurprising, most of the ‘miracle workers’ did nothing but aggravate my acne even more. Now I’m in my mid-twenties and I’ve tried enough crappy skincare to know when a good product comes along, you cling onto it…With that in mind, I was keen to see what the people of the internet consider the best face masks for acne skin, the holy grail formulas they swear by. Real people = real reviews, so if you’re considering a face mask to help battle the breakouts, here’s what you need to try…

We tapped the pros to figure out which masks have the best acne-fading reputation. Here are Best face masks for acne of 2021
1. Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment
“Love me some Glamglow Supermud, it’s expensive but does what it claims. Some days when I’m bougie and don’t feel like using it but want to clear my pores, I’ll do a chemical exfoliant and then pop a couple of my activated charcoal pills + 1-2 tablespoons of water + the aztec healing clay (this part isn’t necessary) into a small bowl and apply that.” Says sloane92.
2. Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Deep Pore Cleansing
Cheap, Effective, Famous,…That’s all about Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Deep Pore Cleansing
“I use Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay with half part Apple cider vinegar and water to make my mask. I leave it on for 10 minutes and gently remove using lukewarm water, then rinse with cold. I immediately follow with toner and a hydrating Korean face sheet mask.” says meesoMeow. “I do this once and week and my face has never looked better. I feel like the healing clay helps with my acne and the hydrating mask helps with my general complexion.”
3. ORIGINS – ‘Origins Clear Improvement™ ‘ Charcoal Honey Mask
Charcoal is an OG when it comes to acne-fighting solutions. It soaks up excess oil and draws out impurities and buildup from your pores. With added ingredients like fermented honey and golden wildflower, which also help to moisturize, your skin will be clear, nourished, and zit-free.
4. SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Masque
With acne comes redness, which can make spots look more apparent and irritated. This mask has active botanicals and hyaluronic acid that will treat redness, which Dr. Nussbaum says is great for sensitive skin.
Thanks to a high concentration of active botanicals including cucumber, thyme and olive, and a unique calming dipeptide, this mask quickly reduces the temperature of angry skin while minimizing the intensity of the skin’s reactivity to external stressors. Hyaluronic acid hydrates and comforts tight skin while the light gel-like texture eases discomfort.
5. SALICYLIC Acid + LACTIC Acid Blemish Clarifying Mask
This mask is Dr. Guanche’s number one pick. The complexion-clearing product uses salicylic acid from white willow bark, wintergreen extract, and meadowsweet to provide an all-natural cleanse that reduces the appearance of blemishes and redness.
With 100% of the total ingredients are from natural origin. 50% of the total ingredients are from Organic Farming. If you have a sensitive skin, you will love this.
6. Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask
Pumpkin enzyme exfoliates while alpha hydroxy acid rejuvenates to increase the skin’s cell turnover. Both also work to reduce fine lines and smooth wrinkles. You’ll have visibly smoother skin after only a few uses.
“I love this! After trying a small sample at a friends house I thought I’d give it a try. It does have a slight tingling sensation but to some this might “burn”. I personally love feeling like peeling off a layer of skin for that baby softness. 10/10 will always repurchase forever.
Oh make sure you have a good moisturizer for afterward. Your skin will drink it.” – Stephanie
7. Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask With Rose Clay
Tired of those pesky blackheads littering your nose? This floral-scented clay mask will take care of blackheads in no time and leave your skin feeling soft as hell.
“I have dry skin so I was hesitant to try this but I had a few pores that were getting large and noticeable. I must say that this product did make a difference. It goes on and comes off easy – no bad or strong smell. I’ll buy again.” – Katherine
8. The Body Shop Spa of the World Himalayan Charcoal
Acne-prone reviewers are obsessed with The Body Shop’s charcoal mask. One commenter said: “My skin was smoother, red marks less visible, blemishes visibly improved and my face felt incredibly clean.”
Another, satisfied customer wrote: “I am telling you people will literally say, ‘wow your skin is glowing’, and for all my fellow peeps who struggle with acne out there, you know how much this compliment means.”
9. L’Oreal Paris Pure Clay Black Charcoal Detox Face Mask
Packaging: Surprisingly great quality glass jar with secure lid and safety lid as well to preserve freshness.
Smell: Fresh, earthy scent that isn’t overbearing.
Consistency: Fairly thick, creamy and smooth texture.
Applying the product is easy, just like any other face mask – because it is on the runnier side, its pretty easy to apply. It does dry fully but when you wash it off, it reverts back to a liquid so i’m afraid it requires a bit more to get off (as I don’t like being too rough with my skin) and unfortunately, make a bit of a mess around the sink but that’s easily cleaned up.
You can find this potent mask on your local beauty. The creamy formula doesn’t dry like a traditional clay mask but instead leaves your skin feeling clean and hydrated.
10. L’Oreal Paris Pure Clay Blemish Rescue Blue Algae Face Mask
Another mask comes from L’Oreal. This mask with this seaweed-infused clay formula for just ten minutes for fresh, healthy skin. If you feel a breakout coming on, this purifying mask will unclog and destress your skin.
The clay mask was easy to apply and easy to remove, although it does stain a light flannel, its best to go for a dark cloth. The mask gently absorbs into the skin, you look like you are auditioning for a Smurf movie! But this mask is worth every single penny, I actually can’t beleive how great the price is. These masks last much longer than the recommended ten applications they suggest. L’Oreal are good to mention that you only need to cover the effect area maybe not the whole face.
How to apply a face mask
Ideally, you need to apply it like you’re applying frosting to a cake. You can use your fingers or a brush.
Avoid the delicate areas of your face, like your eyes, nostrils and eyebrows, but be sure to include your neck. You wouldn’t want to have young-looking skin on your face and have an aging neck (yikes!)
After application, wait for the mask to dry, which is generally around 15 to 30 minutes. You can use this time to read a book, watch a movie or surf the net.
Be conscious about the time you leave the mask on your face. Sheet masks, for example, shouldn’t be left too long on the skin- otherwise they will start to draw out moisture and dehydrate the skin.
Brands are generally specific about waiting time so make sure you read product labels prior to application.
Remove your mask as instructed. If it’s a peel off mask, start with the corners: your forehead, cheeks and chin.
For masks that need to be rinsed, use ample amount of water to get everything removed. As I said, you don’t need to be too hard with your skin.
You can use a washcloth if removing becomes difficult.
If you are wondering as to when to use face masks, I’d say it depends on what your skin needs.
If it’s for exfoliation and detoxification, you can apply your face mask twice a week. For hydrating face masks, using them every other day or three times a week would be ideal.
Masks are a definite game changer when it comes to getting healthier and more beautiful skin. However, for those with problematic skin, choosing and using a face mask requires a lot of consideration.
